About Me
Thank you for visiting my site. I am a primate behavioural ecologist and conservation scientist. My research aims to investigate the drivers and consequences of anthropogenic activities in equatorial Africa. My work is mostly based at two locations: Bioko Island and Monte Alén National Park, both in Equatorial Guinea. At these sites I use a multidisciplinary approach that combines innovative techniques, such as bioacoustics (study of environmental sounds), with traditional surveying techniques to monitor and understand changes in the ecosystems and develop evidence-based conservation strategies. I also worked for over a decade in the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania, studying the Sanje mangabey, an Endangered primate endemic to that region. My research has a strong science-policy component, working regularly alongside government officials to translate the results of my research into effective policy.
After working for over 7 years as a Senior Lecturer in Conservation Science at the University of the West of England, in 2023 I had to relocate to Calgary, Canada, due to family reasons. I am now an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary. I hold a Ph.D. and MSc in Biological Anthropology from Stony Brook University (USA), and a BSc in Zoology from Alcalá University (Spain).
